Topic: Challenges and opportunities of using ABMs for simulating social systems
Abstract: Due to their ability to simulate heterogeneous individuals over space and time, ABMs are becoming an increasingly popular tool for simulating social systems. Applications now range from transport, crime, mobility to health. However the success of these models is tempered by a number of key challenges: these include how to represent and embed different behaviours, geographies and incorporate causal relationships. As interest in the urban digital twin agenda develops, how we scale models up to the city and national levels are emerging priorities. This talk will introduce agent-based models and discuss each of these challenges in turn.
